BitMine, chaired by Tom Lee, holds 5.93 million ETH, with a paper loss of about $5 billion, and an average purchase cost between $3,400 and $3,900. The same Tom Lee publicly stated on September 13 that the crypto market will be "very bullish" over the next 12 months, with the four-year cycle bottom possibly coming next month. A person holding 5 billion yuan in losses tells you the future is extremely bullish. Do you think this is faith, or a way to survive? Let's reconstruct the full picture of this gamble In August 2025, BitMine began building ETH positions at an average price of $3,840 to $3,950. In 35 days, it bought $5 billion, earning the title of "world's largest ETH treasury." In October 2025, ETH surged to a peak of $4,955. BitMine's floating gains were once extremely significant. And then? ETH fell from $4,955 all the way down to around $1,500, a drop of over 57%. BitMine's book losses expanded to about $10.5 billion in June 2026. Now, ETH has rebounded to around $2,500. BitMine's floating loss narrowed from $10.5 billion to $5 billion. Sounds like good news? Doing the math: BitMine's average holding cost is about $3,513, ETH is now about $2,500. Still 40% short of breaking even. In other words, ETH has risen from the current $2,500 to $3,500, and BitMine is just enough to break even. Before that, every word Tom Lee says "bullish" is essentially defending his own balance sheet. Can staking yields save lives? BitMine has staked over 5 million ETH, with an annualized staking income of about $330 million. 330 million. That sounds like a lot. But compared to the 5 billion unrealized loss, staking income only accounts for 6.6% of the loss. If ETH falls further, the unrealized loss will continue to widen, and 330 million won't even be made up. What's even more painful is that BitMine's financial report shows staking income in the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 was about $45.7 million, but the net loss for the same period reached $83.6 million—because the Ethereum derivatives options trading strategy lost $92.1 million, swallowing all staking yields. You make money by staking while losing money on options. Doesn't this look like you use stablecoin interest to open contracts? So what about the story of the "100 trillion tokenization"? Tom Lee's latest narrative is: migrating $100 trillion in assets on-chain at a 1% fee rate generates $1.1 trillion in annual revenue, corresponding to $20 trillion in market opportunities. This is a typical forward discount narrative. Using a sufficiently large future imagination space to hedge against the current $5 billion book awkwardness. And note one detail: Tom Lee said the 2% crypto allocation recommended by Fundstrat over a decade ago has now ballooned to over 85% in customer accounts. 2% becomes 85%. This sounds like a footnote to a bull market. But look at it another way—if crypto assets make up 85% of your portfolio, how much room for error do you have? Tom Lee said clients didn't increase their positions; it was just that the price went up. But what about when the price drops? 85% of positions fall, and 2% of positions fall—the experience is completely different. The "gray rhino" most to watch out for BitMine's holdings account for about 5% of Ethereum's circulating supply. If BitMine is forced to reduce its holdings due to balance sheet pressure, it will have a huge impact on ETH's price. Analysts estimate that the forced sell-off could cause ETH to drop another 20% to 40%, turning today's book losses into actual losses. But BitMine has about 2 million ETH staked, and withdrawal queues may be delayed by days or even weeks. This means that even if you want to run, you can't escape. Staking locks up liquidity and BitMine's fallback route. This is both protection and shackle. Back to the core question Tom Lee's "extreme bullishness" is based on the underlying logic: the $19 billion in leverage last October has already been cleared, and the bottom of the four-year cycle will appear next month. This assessment might be correct. But when a person's holdings determine their viewpoint, their opinion is no longer just a viewpoint, but a stance. BitMine holds 5.93 million ETH, aiming for 5% of the total network supply. Every time it shouts "bullish," it is managing its market value for its position. So, who is ultimately paying the bill for this 5 billion yuan? Are they retail investors who trust Tom Lee and follow along? Are they investors holding BMNR shares? Or everyone holding ETH—because on the day BitMine is forced to sell, the cost of the crash will be borne by the entire market.
