BTC at $83,800, dare to chase it?
ETF lost $680 million in a week, tonight's CPI hangs overhead, price stuck right in the middle of the box—tonight, you either slap your thigh or get swept out.
First, look at the surface: sideways, low volume, bulls and bears both playing dead.
In 24 hours, it’s been grinding between 82,950 and 84,150, daily chart still in the 81,000 to 86,000 box. RSI 54 to 61, neutral with a slight bullish bias, ADX just above 10—no trend. Moving averages are stuck together, volume shrinks to a sleep-inducing level.
You might think: it’s been sideways so long, it should break out, right?
I tell you: this isn’t accumulation, it’s waiting for judgment. Tonight at 21:30, US September CPI is the trigger.
First thing: ETFs are bleeding, institutions are hesitant to buy.
From October 5 to 9, spot ETFs had a net outflow of about $680 million. October 7 saw a single-day outflow of $490 million, the worst day since June. October 9 only saw a $21 million inflow. Reports say on October 13 there was a net inflow of $176 million, but it hasn’t covered the previous week’s losses yet.
Citibank and others still call for a 12-month target of 113,000, reasoning that ETF demand will return. But this logic requires two consecutive weeks of net inflows to reprice; right now, it’s just stopped the bleeding.
In plain language:
Institutions are buying, but hesitantly. You’re not trading against a whale, you’re racing against a crowd of onlookers.
Second thing: the real BTC pricing factor now is macro, not on-chain.
In September, the Fed raised rates by 25 basis points, pushing rates to 3.75%-4.00%, the first hike in three years. The October 7 minutes showed most officials think another hike this year is "appropriate." For the October 28 FOMC, the market prices about 80% chance of no change, 15%-20% chance of another 25bp hike.
Tonight’s CPI market expectations: headline MoM +0.6%, YoY 3.6%; core MoM +0.2%, YoY 2.5%. Gasoline surged in September, so a bad headline is almost consensus. The market really trades the core.
Core 0.3%: October hike probability pushes toward 30%, BTC likely to drop first.
Core 0.2%: meets expectations, mostly range-bound.
Core 0.1%: discounts recent hike bets, rebound has continuity.
10-year US Treasury yield closed near 5.24% last week, dollar index at an 18-month high. Funds prefer cash and bonds.
You’re not trading BTC, you’re betting on CPI.
If your position is heavy, you’re using margin to guess a number you can’t possibly predict.
Third thing: the candlesticks tell you, 83,800 is the midpoint.
Daily: October 2 high was 87,100 to 87,200, October 5-6 still around 86,700 to 87,000. October 8 and 13 dipped twice to 80,300-81,100 then pulled back. Lows are rising, highs are falling. Today’s range is 82,950 to 84,150, with 83,800 right in the middle.
Key levels:
Resistance: 84,150 → 84,550 → 85,500 to 86,000 → 86,700 (the real gate for bulls)
Support: 82,950 → 82,200 to 82,600 → 81,000 to 81,100 (solid defense of two pin bars) → 79,900 → 76,500
Daily RSI 54 to 61, neutral with slight bullish bias. ADX just above 10, no trend. The 4-hour rebound from 81,000 to 83,800 is a correction, not a main rise. Without consecutive closes above 84,150, this is just a box rebound.
When there’s no trend, the biggest enemy for traders isn’t the market, it’s their itchy hands.
Bull vs. bear, judge for yourself:
On one side:
The big cycle isn’t broken, 90-day roughly +32%, mid-term still in an up channel
Perpetual positions 18 to 22 billion, down 2% in 24h, leverage retreating not increasing
Binance funding rate +0.001% to +0.002%/8h, bulls not crowded
October 13 ETF net inflow about $176 million, signs of stopping the bleeding
81,000 solid defense of two pin bars still intact
On the other side:
ETF lost $680 million in a week, institutions hesitant
September rate hike, minutes hawkish, December hike expectations rising
10-year Treasury at 5.24%, dollar at 18-month high, risk assets headwind
Daily highs falling, ADX just above 10, no trend
Tonight’s CPI, core 0.3% will crush, gap down will invalidate stop losses
Trading strategy
1. Now (83,800, before data):
No new directional orders.
If long, stop loss below 82,600. If short, stop loss above 84,550.
If neither side is in place, stay flat and watch the data.
2. Slightly bullish (main scenario, but wait for position):
Only go long in two cases:
Pullback to 82,200-82,600 with lower wick and close back, stop loss 81,800, first target 84,500, second target 85,500. If daily can’t close above 84,500, reduce position by half.
CPI is cooler (core ≤0.2%, and no broad surprise except oil), price stands above 84,550 and holds on pullback, then chase, target 86,000 to 86,700, stop loss below breakout candle low. No add until daily closes above 86,700.
3. Slightly bearish (data trade, not a bear market):
Rebound 84,500 to 85,500 with long upper wick and weak volume, short, stop loss 86,200, target 82,900/82,000.
Daily close below 82,000 is structural weakness, next support 81,000, then 79,900. Only if 81,000 also closes below, include 76,500 in plan. Before that, chasing shorts on breakouts risks being stopped out by the two lows at 81,000.
83,800 isn’t a start point, it’s the center of the table.
Tonight’s CPI won’t kill bulls or bears, it kills heavy positions.
Don’t ask if BTC will rise, ask if your position can survive tonight.
Big cycle intact, short cycle no trend—this is the most grinding market.
