The real danger is not breaking below 80,000, but betting all your chips before the market confirms.
Many people are now focused on BTC at $81,000.
Some think that after a 2% drop, the panic selling has mostly released, and around $80,000 is a bottom-fishing opportunity; others worry that once the round number support is lost, the next round of decline will begin.
The market never lacks bottom-fishers; what it lacks are those who can survive after bottom-fishing to wait for a rebound.
The real reason behind this round of decline.
On October 14, the US September CPI annual rate rose to 3.7%, higher than the market expectation of 3.6%; core CPI also rose from 2.4% to 2.6%. Inflation is rising again, and the market has started to bet on the Federal Reserve possibly raising interest rates further.
Subsequently, US Treasury yields rose, the dollar strengthened, the Nasdaq fell 1.88%, and the S&P 500 dropped 1.1%. BTC could not remain immune and came under pressure along with risk assets.
This is the key: BTC falling does not necessarily mean there is a problem within the crypto market itself, but that the overall market's willingness to take on risk is declining. Related market reports also show that the inflation data, which exceeded expectations, reignited rate hike concerns, suppressing Bitcoin's performance.
In other words, what weighs on BTC now is not just a candlestick but also the uncertainty of macro liquidity.
So, how should we judge around $81,480?
I don’t guess the bottom, nor do I prematurely declare the bull market over. The focus next is on three paths.
First: Holding $80,000, BTC regains footing.
If the price retests around $80,000, selling pressure gradually weakens, lows stop moving lower, and it can climb back above $81,500–$82,000, then this area may have effective support.
Note, it is "may," not "must."
What’s really worth watching is whether the rebound is accompanied by volume and whether selling pressure eases on the retest. If the price can gradually reclaim $82,000 and push toward the $83,000–$84,000 range, there is a short-term chance to shift from weakness to recovery.
Don’t assume the main force will definitely save the price just because it has dropped to a round number. Cheap price does not equal cheap risk.
Second: Breaking below $80,000 but quickly recovering.
This pattern is the most confusing.
Once it breaks below $80,000, stop-loss and panic selling may concentrate, and the price might quickly dip further. But if it then quickly pulls back above $80,000 and holds on the retest, be alert to the possibility of short sellers taking profits and a short-term market reversal.
Here’s a detail: breaking below and recovering does not mean immediately going long.
It’s best to wait for the price to stabilize and confirm on the retest before considering participation. Otherwise, you might think you caught a reversal, but in reality, you just caught a bounce during the decline.
Third: Effectively breaking below $80,000 but failing to reclaim it on the rebound.
This is the scenario I think requires the most caution.
If BTC falls below $80,000 and stays below, and the rebound near $80,000 is pushed down by selling pressure, it indicates the original support may be turning into resistance.
At this point, don’t comfort yourself with "it’s oversold, it should rebound."
The market won’t stop falling just because you’re losing money, nor will it give bulls face just because $80,000 is a round number.
If this pattern is confirmed, short-term priority should be controlling position size and reducing leverage, rather than continuously adding positions to lower cost. Next, observe previous lows and new buying support areas, wait for market signals, and don’t pre-write a rebound script.
The most costly mistake in trading is not buying high, but being wrong and refusing to admit it.
If you trade spot, consider building positions in batches but plan ahead how much drawdown you can tolerate; if you trade contracts, don’t heavily bet on direction just because of a round number. Leverage won’t amplify your judgment, only the cost of wrong judgment.
Currently, BTC is near $81,000, and $80,000 is an important observation level but not a natural iron bottom.
Hold and watch for support; if broken but recovered, watch for confirmation; if broken and rebound fails, first manage risk.
Don’t rush to prove you can catch the lowest point. The truly skilled trader isn’t the one who always buys at the bottom, but the one who still has capital to wait for the next opportunity when the market goes wrong.
