Vitalik: Nearly half of Bitcoin mining costs are electricity fees, while AI inference electricity fees are less than 5%
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted a "Today’s Fun Fact" today: The cost of Bitcoin mining is roughly half spent on equipment and half on electricity; AI inference costs are almost entirely equipment costs.
The table he attached breaks it down further. Mining one BTC costs about $94,000, with about 40% spent on mining machines, cooling, and other equipment, and about 46% on electricity. Running AI inference on one GPU for a year costs about $26,000, with equipment accounting for about 76% and electricity only about 4.8%.
In other words, mining competes on who has cheaper electricity, while AI inference competes on who can afford and use chips better.

Even so, users who had long been accumulating
