September's inflation reports did more than beat forecasts: both headline and core CPI and PPI came in above expectations. That broadens the policy problem, because the Fed cannot easily dismiss the surprise as one volatile category. Still, Daly and Goolsbee underline that a further hike is a live debate, not a settled outcome.
