About BankTokensVsStablecoins

Dallas Fed says tokenized deposits remain bank deposits, but instant transfers may weaken funding stability and raise rate sensitivity. In one scenario, banks' 10-year-equivalent risk capacity falls about $700B, not deposits or loans. WSJ says 10+ firms are discussing a joint stablecoin; JPMorgan reviewed it, but no product is being built. Tokenized deposits retain bank funding; stablecoins move more freely across wallets, platforms and chains. This may reshape credit and USDT/USDC competition.

Tokenized deposits and stablecoins may look similar on-chain, but their balance-sheet effects point in different directions. Deposits preserve bank funding; stablecoins gain utility by moving across wallets, platforms and chains. That portability is the advantage, yet instant transferability could also make bank funding more rate-sensitive. The key signal is not an assumed $700B loss of deposits or loans. The Dallas Fed scenario describes roughly $700B less 10-year-equivalent risk capacity. If that pressure materializes, the contest with USDT and USDC may be shaped as much by bank credit economics as by payment technology. Not advice, just analysis. #BankTokensVsStablecoins

Tokenized deposits are going to come at stablecoins so hard in the years to come. Banks will make deposits programmable, interoperable, and available 24/7. They can offer businesses much of what they want from stablecoins without asking them to leave the banking system, which preserves the bank relationship (and trust), regulatory certainty, and government guarantees. But they’ll still be restricted more than stablecoins. Stablecoins will still have the important advantage of moving freely outside a single bank’s customer base and across platforms. It’s unclear just how portable tokenized deposits will become; most of it will be determined by regulations. Most likely outcome: stablecoins become sandwiched by tokenized deposits, serving as the means of money movement but not the means of holding deposits at the beginning or end of money moving.

a dozen major banks announced a shared stablecoin today, and JPMorgan is out here evaluating its own (third attempt, but who's counting). every bank wants a stablecoin. no bank wants to use another bank's stablecoin. this movie ends with 40 incompatible coins and one very bored routing layer that wins everything...

JPMorgan has been evaluating a stablecoin of its own, per the WSJ. Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Santander are exploring a joint one. These desks spent ten years debanking crypto. Tether booked $13B in profit in 2024. The banks finally did that math.
